New cancer research centre launched with The Alfred
Monash University and The Alfred have launched the Australian Cancer Research Foundation Centre for Dynamic Immuno-Oncology, aimed at tackling major challenges in cancer immunotherapy by better understanding how a patient’s immune system responds to treatment, headquartered at The Alfred’s Paula Fox Melanoma and Cancer Centre. The centre will conduct real-time monitoring of patients’ responses to immunotherapy to improve detection of early anti-tumour benefits and side-effects, leveraging cutting-edge equipment already at The Alfred including a new $24 million Quadra PET/CT scanner, one of the most advanced of its kind in the world. Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering said the centre would bring together cutting-edge technology and leading cancer immunology experts to accelerate discoveries that improve the effectiveness of immunotherapies, with the collaboration expected to enhance access to breakthrough clinical trials for the 1.2 million people living in the Bayside Health corridor.
Five-year research partnership renewed with Suzhou Industrial Park
Monash University has signed its second five-year agreement, running from 2026 to 2030, with Suzhou Industrial Park, home to the Monash Suzhou Research Institute, signalling the university’s continued commitment to engaging with China. The renewal ensures the institute remains a vital portal for high-impact research and technology transfer, continuing to address what the university calls “problems without passports” such as climate change, energy sustainability and public health. The agreement was witnessed by the Governor of Victoria, who said the partnership works because it builds on Monash’s long association with Suzhou, enabling researchers to collaborate with industry on sustainability, energy, medical technology and resource recovery.
