12 leaders appointed to NSW youth advisory council

The voices of young people across the state will be front and centre thanks to 12 new representatives recently appointed to the NSW Youth Advisory Council.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward said the young leaders would provide advice to the NSW Government on issues of importance to children and young people.

“The Youth Advisory Council provides an opportunity for future leaders to shape policies, to create positive change, and to advocate on behalf of their peers about significant issues,” Mr Ward said.

“The last few months have been some of the most challenging in living memory, and now is the perfect time to engage with young people about what the future looks like.”

Minister for Regional Youth Bronnie Taylor said more than 600 applications were received and 150 individuals shortlisted for the twelve-member Council, which includes representatives from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

“It is fantastic to see so many young people putting their hands up to be a part of something bigger and wanting to improve the lives of their peers,” Mrs Taylor said.

“This is about making sure young people have a direct line to this Government so we can work together to implement their ideas and address their issues.”

The Council will consult with young people, community groups and Government agencies on issues and policies concerning young people, and will then advise Ministers and the Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP).
