Swimz Guildford Calls for Urgent Water Safety Action After Holiday Drownings
Swimz Guildford extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by recent drowning tragedies over the holiday period. These heartbreaking losses highlight the urgent need for stronger water safety awareness and action.
In just the past two months, and in February already, we have seen multiple drownings— including young children and adults in backyard pools, rivers and beaches across Greater Sydney and New South Wales.
February 2025:
- Drowning of a five-year-old boy in Sydney’s west, after being pulled unconscious from the water on Saturday 1 February.
January 2025:
- The tragic loss involving a Western Sydney toddler while on holiday in Bali.
- The drowning of a 5-year-old autistic boy in the Georges River.
- The loss of an adult male swimming at a beach.
December 2024:
- The drowning of a 3-year-old child in a backyard pool in South West Sydney.
- The loss of an adult male from Sydney while swimming at a beach in Wollongong.
- The drowning of an adult male tourist on Christmas Day.
- Teenage boy swept into the ocean on Christmas Eve.
- Adult female drowned at a beach, despite the frantic efforts of lifesavers to help her.

This holiday season should serve as a powerful reminder that water safety is not optional—it’s essential.
Each incident highlights the urgency of addressing water safety within our communities. Many of these incidents could have been prevented with proper supervision, education, and access to water safety programs.
At Swimz Guildford, we believe learning to swim is a vital life-saving skill, not just a recreational activity. With drowning remaining one of the leading causes of accidental death, particularly in young children, we are calling on the community to prioritise water safety by:
- Enrolling children and adults in learn-to-swim programs to build confidence and life-saving skills in the water
- Ensuring constant supervision of children around all types of water, including pools, rivers, beaches, and even bathtubs.
- Installing and maintaining pool safety measures, such as fencing, gates, and alarms.
- Being aware of water safety risks when traveling or visiting unfamiliar environments.
Swimz Guildford remains committed to providing accessible and inclusive swimming programs to ensure every family in our community can benefit from the life-saving skills that swimming provides.
To this end, this year, we are exploring new ways to expand our impact, including potential collaborations to strengthen drowning prevention efforts across the community.
Let us work together to prevent future tragedies and protect the most vulnerable members of our community.
