Telstra stops 185 million scam texts reaching customers’ phones

Telstra’s scam text filter has stopped a whopping 185 million scam texts from reaching its customers phones since it was launched in April.
That means the filter has blocked around 1,500 scam texts every minute, and 20 per second.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission received reports of Australians losing $10 million to scam texts last year.
Telstra’s tool was launched as Australians have reported being bombarded with scam texts, with many receiving several a week from scammers posing as companies like Australia Post, banks, the Australian Tax Office and Medicare.
The filter blocks text messages on the Telstra network that appear suspicious.
“It’s a complex and evolving system, but in a nutshell our automatic machine scanning is on the lookout for messages that meet our detailed criteria of suspicious indicators,” Telstra’s Narelle Devine said.
“These are based on learnings from previous scam patterns such as where a message came from, where it’s going, and how many are distributed across our network.”
Messages the filter has blocked include lures to install malware on phones, prompts to hand over your personal details to scammers, and scams requesting financial data while impersonating organisations.
Telstra also launched a scam call blocker mid last year, which it claims has blocked 200 million scam calls.
Other telecommunications companies are yet to launch or announce such features.
However, Optus has said it blocked nearly 30 million text messages relating to the Flubot scam alone last year and contacted thousands of customers impacted by the scam to help them mitigate its effects.
