State memorial for holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku OAM on Dec 15

The State Memorial for Holocaust survivor and author Eddie Jaku OAM will be held at Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday, December 15 at 10 am.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said Jaku, who died in October aged 101, had a strength of character that would be long remembered across New South Wales.

Eddie Jaku was someone who had faced the worst of mankind, yet emerged with a view on life that had a special warmth, strength and positivity,” Perrottet said.

“When he chose Australia after surviving the Holocaust, our nation gained a remarkable individual.

“Born in Germany, he was interned in Auschwitz in his early twenties, but Eddie Jaku had the kind of character that couldn’t be damaged or extinguished.”

Last year, at the age of 100, Eddie wrote a memoir “The Happiest Man on Earth” which went on to become an award-winning international best seller.

“He leaves the legacy that even in difficult times, there is always hope.”

In 2013, Eddie was awarded the Order of Australia for his significant contribution to Holocaust education and for his services to the Jewish community.

The State Memorial will be held at Sydney Town Hall at 10am and will be live streamed. The public is welcome to attend. Doors will open at 9am.

More information about the Memorial, including an online condolence book and how to watch the live stream, is at nsw.gov.au/state-services.
