Silent Protest-4 held in Ludhiana for freedom from pollution

Fourth consecutive silent protest demanding freedom from pollution was staged today by the ‘PAC Sutlej and Mattewara Forest’ on the Haibowal bridge over the Buddha Dariya river. The main objective of this series of protests is to draw the attention of the Punjab Government to the growing problem of pollution in the state and to put pressure on the government machinery to address it.

Col CM Lakhanpal of Sangharsh Committee who is leading these protests said, “We are holding our fourth consecutive demonstration on Buddha Nullah on the issue of pollution of the Sutlej. In our last protest two weeks ago we raised several questions about the problem of dairies in the city like why is govt spending 50 crores of tax payers hard earned money on effluent treatment plants for gobar when the state government and the municipal corporation have publicly assured many times that they are taking dairies out of the city which is also as per NGT guidelines. The government has not been able to give any answers to such questions in the last two weeks.” He demanded immediate cancellation of the Rs 650 crore Buddha Nullah Rejuvenation Project.

DR Bhatti DGP Retd Punjab Police and now with Sanjha Sunhera Punjab Manch said, “This is one of the most important battles of the people of Punjab and we fully support it.”

Mr. Jaswant Singh Zafar of Budha Darya Task Force said, “We had earlier demanded from the government that the work of revival of Budha Darya should be done with full transparency as this concerns the issue of drinking water and health of millions in south Punjab and Rajasthan. This critical project can succeed only  if all its sub projects are done with complete honesty, transparency and in a scientific way. ”

Mr Brijbhushan Goyal who writes extensively on social causes said, “Those involved with river water polluton of Buddha Darya and Sutlej are criminals who are distributing cancer to unsuspecting people of south Punjab and they deserve to be jailed.” He appealed to the new CM and cabinet of Punjab to investigate this extremely important issue of the state.

Dr BP Mishra of Buddha Darya Action Front said, “The problem of Buddha Darya is mainly due to nexus of industrialists with govt officials and top politicians. This criminal nexus has to be broken if we are to succeed in cleaning Buddha Nullah and converting it back into Buddha Darya.”

Kapil Arora of the Council of Engineers said, “On the one hand, the government has failed to come up with a proper solution for the problem of pollution of rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. now it is creating more prolbmes by proposing industrial parks on flood plains of Sutlej which will choke recharging routes of the underground water in that area further deepening the deepening water crisis in the state. ”

Mrs. Harpreet Soin of Ludhiana Cares Ladies Society said that the wastewater from dairies, sewerage of houses and effluents of dyeing industry is a huge problem but dumping of solid waste in Buddha river is also a very serious issue which needs to be resolved. It is very important that the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana should come up with a concrete roadmap in this regard. Even here right behind the hospital there is a huge mountain of garbage which keeps falling into the Buddha River. She said that the governments talk a lot but then very soon they forget all they say so such demonstrations are very much required at regular intervals to remind the government about important issues so that they actually reach the goals and solve problems.
