Authorities have called the death of a baby girl outside a Perth private school a “sad tragedy” as they try to piece together what happened.
The 11-month-old was found by her mother in the family car at Kingsway Christian College in Perth’s north yesterday afternoon where she was collecting another child from an independent after hours daycare.
“Tragically the child was unresponsive and despite immediate health care, the child was unable to be resuscitated and sadly and tragically died,” WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said.
Police arrived at the scene just before 6pm and remained there until after midnight, focusing their attention on a classroom used for after hours childcare and collecting the family car as evidence.
The 39-year-old mother was interviewed by detectives today and is not being investigated criminally, police said.
Part of the investigation will look at how long the child was inside the car.
Kingsway Christian College released a statement saying: “Words cannot begin to express the depth of sadness we feel as a result of what, at this time, appears to be the accidental death late yesterday afternoon of an 11-month-old child.”
The school principal says the campus is providing support to staff and parents, and that “prayers go out to loved ones”.
