Actor Rajinikanth will be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award. This announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday.
“Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2020 to one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema Rajnikant ji. His contribution as actor, producer and screenwriter has been iconic,” Javadekar tweeted.
The jury this year for the award included singer Asha Bhosle, director-producer Subhash Ghai, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, music composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan and Biswajeet Chatterjee.
Congratulating Rajinikant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that’s Shri Rajinikant Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him.”
It remains to be seen if the feting of Rajinikant in the middle of the Tamil Nadu election impacts poll trends.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, BJP’s Tamil Nadu in charge CT Ravi and state ministers on Thursday joined millions others in greeting Tamil superstar Rajinikanth on being chosen for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award.
Deputy Chief Minister C N Ashwath Narayan and Health Minister K Sudhakar also greeted the actor.
Born to a Marathi family in Bengaluru, Rajinikanth’s original name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad.
He did his schooling in Bengaluru and spent much of his prime in the Garden City.
The actor’s relatives including his brother live in Bengaluru and the actor often visits them.
His stay in Tamil Nadu did not blunt his command over Kannada as he speaks the language fluently.
Celebrations broke out in parts of Bengaluru with a substantial Tamil population as the news came about the Phalke award to Rajinikanth.
