Queensland’s Delta outbreak ‘biggest since first wave’ with 16 new cases

Queensland has recorded 16 new local Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours.
The 16 cases are all linked to the Indooroopilly cluster, Deputy Premier Steven Miles said.
Four of them are linked to the Ironside State School, including one teacher; two to Indooroopilly State High School; one to Brisbane Boys Grammar; while nine are close contacts or family members of existing cases.
“That brings this outbreak to 63 genomically-linked cases meaning that in less than a week, this has become our biggest outbreak since the first wave last year,” Mr Miles said.
The source of the Cairns case remains unknown, though it has been confirmed to be the Delta strain.
Mr Miles said the case had been vaccinated.
Two other cases were reported in hotel quarantine.
Mr Miles said Queensland had “smashed” its testing record, with 51,479 conducted in the past 24 hours.
The previous record was 35,357.
“Let’s keep that testing rate high,” Mr Miles said.
“That’s one of the things that will allow us to get out of lockdown as quickly as possible.”

Ekka public holiday postponed

Mr Miles said next week’s Ekka public holiday would be cancelled, with restrictions likely to remain in parts of the state.
The show itself has already been cancelled, with the holiday previously scheduled for Wednesday.
Mr Miles said the holiday would be rescheduled again to later this year, but the date was yet undetermined.
“To create the new rescheduled holiday we need to go to parliament and pass legislation,” he said.
“That won’t be able to happen until the end of August at the earliest.”
