Punjab recorded the highest case fatality rate (CFR) in the country on Wednesday, surpassing that of Gujarat (2.91%) and Maharashtra (2.9%).
Post-August 31, Punjab’s CFR has risen from 2.7 per cent to 2.95 per cent in just nine days. Recording almost 2,000 new cases for the past few days, Punjab’s caseload stood at 2,134 of Wednesday.
Dr Rajiv Bhaskar, Punjab’s nodal officer for Covid-19, explaining the high CFR, said patients were coming late to hospitals, mostly upon developing serious symptoms such as breathlessness.
Health officials said the CFR could be brought down only through “early detection and treatment.”
