Online plan needed to help covid positive/ isolated Year 12 students appear for exams

The Victorian Liberal Nationals are calling for the immediate provision of an online exam option for students who test positive or are required to isolate during the upcoming examination period.

After two years of disruption and remote learning, Victorian students deserve to know that the government has a plan so that they can sit their final exams, if they test positive or have to isolate.

Specifically the Victorian Liberal Nationals are calling for:

  • All exams to be offered online with appropriate monitoring for any student prevented from sitting them.
  • All students to be provided with computer devices and internet connection as required, so that all students have access to the appropriate technology to sit online exams.

The technology already exists for students to securely sit examinations online, as is demonstrated by the university sector where this is common practice. All students should be able to sit their exams confidently.

With at least 33 final year students testing positive thus far, further cases and exposures are a foreseeable problem requiring an immediate plan.

Shadow Minister for Education, David Hodgett said, “Students need certainty for their exams. Covid is not ending, so the government must provide a plan for those students who cannot sit their exams in the usual way”.

At the moment there is no plan from the government regarding year 11 and 12 students who are to sit exams but who are positive cases or who must isolate. With 33 students already prevented from sitting the GAT, it is a foreseeable problem that must be urgently addressed.

Students in tertiary education commonly sit secure, remote exams for nearly 2 years. The technology exists, now the government must provide a plan for students so they can have certainty for their year 12 exams.
