All trees planted in NSW on National Tree Day will contribute to the NSW Government target of planting one million trees by 2022, thanks to new partnerships with Planet Ark and Bunnings.
The three-year partnership with Planet Ark for National Tree Day will further promote efforts to increase the number of trees planted as part of the NSW Government’s campaign to green Sydney. Similarly, a new partnership with Bunnings will see 8,750 trees given to Sydneysiders as part of a backyard planting pilot program.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the partnerships will support the Government’s commitment to boost tree canopy cover right across Greater Sydney.
“We’re almost at 300,000 trees since we started this campaign, but we have a long way to go,” Mr Stokes said.
“Greening our urban neighbourhoods and backyards is integral to our community’s health and wellbeing. More tree canopy means more shade, cooler suburbs and habitats for our beautiful wildlife.
“Developing partnerships with Planet Ark and Bunnings will help deliver better urban environments for generations to come.”
Planet Ark Deputy CEO Rebecca Gilling said the partnership demonstrates the NSW Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
“We’ve worked with the NSW Government on various projects for over 10 years and are very much looking forward to partnering on another great environmental initiative,” Ms Gilling said. “We encourage Sydney residents to get involved in this program and plant a tree for National Tree Day.”
To date, more than 293,000 trees have been planted across Greater Sydney as part of the Greening our City Premier’s Priority to increase tree canopy and green cover across Greater Sydney by planting one million trees by 2022, and five million trees by 2030.
