Man United to lose manager Solskjaer after 4-1 defeat against Watford

United have decided to part company with Solskjaer after talks on Saturday evening, hours after the club suffered a 4-1 defeat at Watford.

The club are determined to ensure Solskjaer receives a respectful parting, with a formal announcement expected in due course.

Manchester United travel to Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Next up is a daunting trip to face Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Nov. 28, which both captain Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane will miss.

Games against Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Young Boys and Norwich follow before mid-December.

Solskjaer was a fan favorite as a player and there was a real desire for the Norwegian to succeed in the dugout.

He went on to guide United to a respectable third in his first full season. United went one better the following season, finishing second and losing to Villarreal in the final of the Europa League.

Solskjaer was then backed heavily this summer, which saw the arrivals of serial winner Raphael Varane, the England international Jadon Sancho and the jaw-dropping return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite the wealth of resources at his disposal, however, the squad has severely underperformed this campaign.

United have just four wins in 13 games. The loss to Watford followed comprehensive defeats against rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in recent weeks, which put Solskjaer’s position in jeopardy.

Who could replace Solskjaer?

Appointing a new manager midway through a campaign is never easy and United’s search for Solskjaer’s successor is unlikely to be straightforward.

Antonio Conte was interested in the job last month. But Tottenham Hotspur acted decisively after they lost 3-0 to United on Oct. 30, sacking Nuno Espirito Santo and taking Conte off the market.

Brendan Rodgers is admired at Old Trafford. But the Leicester City manager would be an expensive option and earlier this week sought to distance himself from the position.
