It’s an era of ####… hashtags. Whosoever thought the symbol would rule the social media universe one day was a visionary; he must be proud, a pioneer who deserves a clap. Another word that deserves mention is netizens, as in citizens of the web world, who seem to love hashtags. Hashtaglove, hashtag hate, hashtag this, a hashtag that###…Hashtag I know everything!
The humble four lines crisscrossing each other never thought their interaction would dictate mankind’s onward journey. Even the creator of the hashtag, whoever it was, would wonder at its exalted status now. It could have been the exclamation mark,! or the star, *, sign. Why did they miss out? Don’t they look appealing too? What’s so special about the hashtag? Does it convey more?
Then a hashtag sneaked into the lanes of glamour – #MeToo. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein knows it better than anyone else, as his sexual misadventures were exposed by leading ladies of Hollywood, one after another. They spoke freely against a man who had abused them, a man who for years had gone about his misdeeds, invigorated by power and money.
When #MeToo entered the lanes of Bollywood, it exposed the dark underbelly of tinsel town too. Proving its worth, it exposed how established gentlemen were not so gentle with certain women.A‘sanskari’ man knows much more about it -the world knows his name by now. He must be in mortal fear of the hashtag, even the shape of it.
Meanwhile, the hashtag got smarter with time or, shall we say, like all things else, corrupted. Women are now using it at will. After all, it’s just a hashtag!
The latest to get tangled in the tentacles of the hashtag is famous Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. A lady named PayalGhoshhas used the services of the hashtag to allege that Kashyap had sexually harassed her. The social world is abuzz with points and counterpoints. Long live the hashtag; it speaks words unspoken.
So, what’s the truth? The hashtag knows…Who are we to comment? ##########
