Friendly community cricket match held to welcome Afghan evacuees

Dozens of Afghan evacuees have been warmly welcomed to NSW in a friendly game of community cricket as part of a revitalised program for humanitarian arrivals.

Minister for Multiculturalism and Sport Natalie Ward met with the group at the launch of The Welcome Project, a program run by Settlement Services International (SSI) in partnership with Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia.

“Since late August, NSW has warmly opened its arms to around 1,000 evacuees from Afghanistan. It is wonderful to see some of them have the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful game of cricket in their new backyard,” Ward said.

“No matter where you are from, sport brings everyone together and this is a wonderful way we can make them feel welcome.”

SSI works with the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs to deliver on-arrival settlement support in NSW. The Welcome Project connects volunteers with refugees as they discover local services such as schools and hospitals and supports them to find long-term housing and jobs.

SSI CEO Violet Roumeliotis said the organisation was delighted to join with Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW, with the sport a much-loved cultural institution for both Afghans and Australians, to launch The Welcome Project.

“At SSI, our mission is to help create a more inclusive society in which everyone can meaningfully contribute to our social, cultural, civic and economic life. Cricket can be utilised as a launch pad for meaningful social connection and as a vehicle of supporting our Afghans evacuees to reach successful settlement outcomes across the whole spectrum of their lives,” Roumeliotis said.

Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said it looked forward to working with SSI to help residents transition into their new surrounds through the power of cricket.

“Australians and Afghans share a common love of cricket and it’s our hope that those new to our shores will find a supportive home within the NSW cricket community,” Germon said.
