Actor Asif Basra, a familiar face in Bollywood movies and TV shows, allegedly died by suicide at his rented accommodation in Dharamsala’s McLeodganj area in Himachal Pradesh.
Asif had reportedly taken two houses on lease on the Jogibara Road and was staying here with his UK-based girlfriend. At 10.30 am, the actor stepped out of his house with his pet dog for a walk. When he didn’t return, his girlfriend went looking for him. She found his body hanging on the roof of his second house, it is learnt.
Asif, a regular visitor to McLeodganj, would spend months at the hill station. He was often spotted at cafes. Kangra SP Vimukt Ranjan said Asif’s girlfriend informed them about the incident. “The actor’s body was found hanging. He used his pet dog’s leash,” he said. The police said preliminary investigation suggested he was suffering from depression.
Most recently known for his role in the thriller series Paatal Lok, Basra had appeared in a number of Bollywood films, including a movie on the 1993 Mumbai blasts Black Friday, the 2002 Gujarat riots Parzania and Kai Po Che.
He had also starred in several plays in India and abroad, performing in English, Hindi and Urdu theatre productions.
Basra was born in Maharashtra’s Amravati in 1967. He moved to Mumbai in 1989 to pursue his acting career.
